Creating Change Through Volunteering: Lessons from a Humanitarian Nurse | TEDxRobina

Helen has dedicated herself in recent years to caring for the victims of some of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises. Helen is currently working at the Gold Coast University Hospital, she remains active in assisting other volunteers wanting to go over to Greece and volunteer in refugee camps. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

“In April 2019, Helen Zahos was our keynote speaker at the University of the sunshine Coast for the Nursing students’ Association. The event was focused on international humanitarian aid as a career for nursing students. As Helen spoke, the entire audience was captivated with her life and professional experiences taking her to humanitarian crises across the globe. All the students were inspired by Helen’s work ethic, dedication and impressive career path.

By hosting Helen to speak to the students about her career path provided the students with an understanding that success takes time. The Nursing students’ Association was appreciative of Helen sharing her motivating experiences at our event”

“I have had the privilege to hear Helen speak on three occasions now. Each time I take away a greater conviction of why I am in my current role and how I can use my skills and ability for greater good. Helen has a way of conveying her message of hope and kindness through real life experiences that leave you feeling inspired. Helen exemplifies what it is to be in the present moment and takes the time to connect with the audience. I look forward to hearing Helen speak at future events.”

“With our International Women’s Day 2017 event preparation, our committee wanted to hold a lunch to celebrate the theme this year of “Empower a Woman, Empower a Nation”. We held a lunch in March and invited 3 guests’ speakers with diverse backgrounds. Helen Zahos was one of our invited speakers who spoke to our audience about her recent humanitarian efforts. There was not a woman in our audience of 50 that was not touched by Helen’s speech. Helen spoke about what drives her to do what she does and her experiences of being told in her early years that she would not achieve anything in this world. Helen’s resolve empowered many women in the room and the feedback we received from our guests and member base was overwhelming. Thank you Helen for being who you are, we can only hope to be as worthy.”
